get a little something right, something real — at least, we try

It's been a tough few weeks. Jumping into class at a new law school is so strenuous. Even starting at the beginning of the semester, Elle's still the new girl, and though she's made a lot of friends already, most of them are in her year. They don't have the experience Emmett had at Harvard; they can't give her all the important tips about how to please the professors. And though she knows better now than to sit in the center of the first few rows — the area she now understands is called "the hot seat" for a reason — she still gets stuck there in a couple classes because everyone else knows better, too.

Now she's juggling a new job on top of it. She's really good at the customer service stuff, at least, but Elle's never actually had a job before. It's rare she's embarrassed by what and who she is, but she's perfectly aware of what a cliché she must seem to be to others. As a result, she's thrown her all into the work.

Luckily, her co-workers are awesome. Elle likes them a lot, and she finds she works a lot of shifts with a fellow blonde named Kate, who is so funny. Well, she was for the first few weeks they worked together. Lately, though, she's had a lot on her mind, Elle is sure. It was such a shock to hear about what happened to Kate's boyfriend. Nothing like ever happened to her sisters at Delta Nu. Here, it's big news around the store. The staff's pretty small; gossip is tough to come by and rarely this big a deal.

But even with others talking, Elle figures they're all in this together. She manages to find an hour in the afternoon to bake cupcakes (she makes Emmett quiz her on property while she does). Truthfully, she's not sure of the boyfriend's status, if he's even awake to enjoy cupcakes, but either way, she figures Kate could use some, and she brings a box of them to work, tied with pink ribbon on top, and leaves it in her cubby. When the workflow slows down and the shop is empty, Elle straightens up a rack where the dresses are out of order, then smiles when she sees Kate nearby.

"Hey," she says gently. "How are you doing? How's your boyfriend?"
